History of Aloe Vera

For over 3,500 years, tales of "healing Aloe Vera" plants have been handed down by word of mouth. First mentioned in the Bible it told of removing Christ from the cross and wrapping his body in Aloe and Myrrh, (John 19:39). We find Aloe Vera appearing mysteriously through various phases of history, with many testimonials to its great medicinal values. The earliest documented use of Aloe Vera comes from the ancient Egyptians, but it was also grown and used by King Solomon, who was said to have valued it highly.

During his travels in the Orient, Marco Polo described the many applications of the Aloe Vera plant. It is known that at the heart of many of the Aztec cures, Aloe Vera was the effective agent. These Aztec herbal medicines were brought back to Europe by the Spanish during the sixteenth century, where they were to become the foundation for modern Western medicine.

Many people assume that the Aloe Vera plant is a cactus – it is, in fact, part of the Lily family. There are well over 200 types of Aloe plants but only one true Aloe Vera plant. Vera, in Latin, means "Truth". Only this Aloe Vera plant is the one which can provide the powerful therapeutic effects which nature has built into it. However the most important one is Aloe Barbadensis. This is the only plant that we at Aloe Aloe Ltd use in our products.

It is found to contain 200 components and 74 known nutrients. These include some of the B vitamins such as B12 and most amino acids, iron, manganese, calcium, Zinc mineral, enzymes etc.

It is only recently that Aloe Vera has been discovered again and has come back into vogue. Strangely, it was the invention of the X-ray and the atom bomb which focused attention upon the plant. It was found early on in the search that the best treatment for protection against radiation burns was Aloe Vera gel.

The manner in which the Aloe Vera plant heals itself is truly amazing. The leaves have no stalks, veins or woody parts and are supported purely by the water in the gel. If a leaf is cut or broken it oozes out the gel. A few seconds later the wound will seal itself. Within the next few minutes a rubber-like, protective coating will seal off any loss of water. In a short time, the wound has completely healed itself as the plant contains a substance which heals wounds effectively.

The gel from the Aloe Vera plant is a most ingenious mixture of antibiotic, astringent, coagulating agent, pain inhibitor and growth stimulator – it is also known as the Wound Hormone - whose function it is to accelerate the healing of injured surfaces.

Aloe Vera is one of the world's oldest natural remedies which has become a true 21st Century healing agent.
